Have you been following iCandy Handmade's Basic Bodice series? It's been a really fun series, where blogger's take a basic bodice block and teach you how to transform it into something not-so-ordinary!

Today I'm the last guest of the series, and am sharing a tutorial for adding pintucks to a bodice pattern. See you there!

Flashback Friday: Shannon from Luvinthemommyhood

Welcome to Flashback Friday! My friend Shannon from Luvinthemommyhood is our guest today, and I know you'll love what she has to share! Shannon is a fellow Canadian, which is enough on it's own for me to love her :), and a mother to two sweet little girls. I'm sure you've all visited Luvinthemommyhood and know what a sweet, genuine, and funny person Shannon is. Definitely one of the nicest bloggers there is.

Shannon is a master at the sewing machine, but I am also always in awe at her skills with knitting needles. She designs patterns for both knitting and sewing, and her Sweetheart Dress pattern is a must for anyone with a daughter! And her Downton Abbey Knit Along makes me long for any spec of knitting talent! So fun. Anyway, we're so glad to have her with us today!

men's dress shirt sleeves to pants tutorial by luvinthemommyhood
Hi everyone! I'm Shannon and I blog over www.luvinthemommyhood.com!  I'm a big fan of Abby's series "Flashback Friday"!  I've been following along with it and was so excited when she asked me to join in!  It's been an absolute riot going back over ancient posts of mine to check out some oldies but goodies of mine from when I first learned how to sew.
When I first started blogging I mostly only knit.  I knew how to do cross-stitch, crafts etc...but had no knowledge for sewing.  I started seeing the "repurposing" movement pop up on all the blogs I was reading and knew I had been bit by the bug!  With my first daughter going through clothes so quick I thought it would be fun to finally learn how to sew.
I jumped in with both feet.  If you know me you know I'm always working on multiple projects and am never scared to just dive in.  What's the worst that could happen right?  You use a seam ripper? No biggie right?  Right.  I ended up sewing one of those popular men's shirt to child's dress projects that my lovely friend Dana of Made whipped up.   I was hooked.  I adored this little dress and from there ended up making another one (seen below) which then led me to making my own sewing tutorial (see what I mean? no fear!) for kids pants made from men's shirt dress sleeves! Fun right? I get such a good laugh checking these out because I can so vividly remember these days just by looking at the pics. I also remember how thrilled I was when www.craftgossip.com blogged about both my dress (shown below) and my pants tutorial!  I think I phoned everyone I knew!
The dress you see above also stuck in mind for years.  I love that little dress and still have it.  In fact I had meant to do a tutorial for it when I first made it but never got around to it.  I finally did though.  You can see the version it inspired called "The Emerson Dress" that I put out just this past year.  I love that my daughter was the model for both shots and I get to see how much she has grown up along with how my sewing and photography skills have improved.
To this day I am still learning. I am always challenging myself and like to think that I am still brave.  I may think a bit longer and try to be a bit wiser before jumping in but I still do it.  I can't help myself...it's fun, it's creative and it challenges me and keeps me feeling inspired.  So if you're just starting to learn to sew or are just waiting to get the courage to try something new, don't be so worried about how to jump in - just do it!  I bet you'll be amazed and proud of the outcome....even if some of them make you laugh a few years down the road.  Everyone's gotta starts somewhere right?  Happy sewing!

Thanks for sharing, Shannon! Isn't it fun to see how her daughter has grown up?! Make sure to check back on Monday for a fun announcement that you won't want to miss! Happy Friday to you all!

Tulle Skirt Tutorial

Tulle skirts like this one from Anthropologie and this one from Shabby Apple are everywhere right now.

I love that frilly, femine skirts like this are in style - they can be both fun and elegant at once, and can make us feel like little girls again. I never thought I could love a skirt as much as a maxi skirt, but I may be mistaken...

I set out to make a tulle skirt that was easy to make, with an elastic waistband. The trouble is that if you simply stretch the waistband elastic to fit the tulle and lining layers, as with a basic elastic waistband skirt, you'll end up with a huge poofy skirt, more dress-up-ish than elegant. Pleating the tulle rather than gathering will help the tulle to lie nicer, but then you have to deal with a closure and opening of some sort on the back of the skirt in order to get it on and off.

With this tutorial, I'll teach you how to combine both methods to get the perfect tulle skirt - it's easy to make and looks beautiful. The best of both worlds!

Ready to get moving?

*I'll give the exact tulle measurements that I used for my skirt, but since we'll be making lots of pleats and gathers, the measurements will probably work for most sizes from small to large. You can of course adjust for a smaller or larger size by adding more or less width of tulle. For the lining and elastic, you'll want to measure yourself and cut as described below.

Materials:
Tulle - 3.5-4 yards of 108" wide tulle
Satin for lining - 2 yards (45" wide)
3" wide elastic - enough to comfortably fit around your waist plus seam allowance
*Seam allowances are 1/2".

Directions:
1. We'll be using the full 108" of tulle width for the circumference of the skirt. You'll just need to cut 4 pieces 108" by the length you'd like. I cut 4 27"x108" pieces. I'm 5'6" and this was a perfect below-knee length for me.

2. For the lining, you can cut it the same length as the tulle (I originally cut mine a couple inches longer to be on the safe side), and as wide as your hips plus about 10".

3. Sew the short sides together of each tulle layer and the lining as well. A serger works great, and if you don't have a serger, you may want to use a french seam to keep the edges looking nice.

4. Matching up all of the seams and top edges, baste all 4 layers of tulle together. The most taxing part of this tutorial is matching up so much tulle - it's hard to see when it's all layered on top of eachother, but be patient and the rest will be a breeze!

5. Now that the tulle is basted into one piece, pleat and pin the top edge until it's the same width as the lining. I like to continually pin on opposite sides to keep my pleats even. It'll take some adjusting as you go to get the pleats right, and if they're not perfect it's not a huge deal :).

6. Matching top edges (with lining inside of tulle and both right side out), pin and baste the tulle and lining to eachother.

7. Stretch your elastic around your waist and cut a comfortable but snug length (plus 1/2" for seam allowance). Tulle skirts are usually worn fairly high on the waist so keep that in mind as you measure. Sew the short ends together.

8. Open seam allowance and stitch each side down, 1/4" from the seam.

9. Use pins to mark half, quarter and eighth marks around top of skirt and around elastic. Making sure elastic waistband seam is in middle back of skirt (you can choose whether to place skirt seams on center back or on one side), pin waistband to skirt, right sides together, at marks. The skirt will of course be larger at this point than the elastic.

10. Stretching the elastic as you go, use a zig zag stitch to join the elastic to the skirt.

11. Remove any basting/pleating stitches that may be visible from the right side.

12. Trim lining hem to same length as tulle or about an inch shorter if needed (it will then be 1-2" shorter than toole when hemmed). Press bottom raw edge of lining 1/2" toward wrong side, and 1/2" toward wrong side again. Stitch in place.

Great job!

Grab your favorite flats and some pretty jewelry...

And enjoy your new skirt!

Flashback Friday: Jess from Me Sew Crazy

Welcome to Flashback Friday! We are super lucky to have my friend Jess from Me Sew Crazy with us today. Jess is the designer of some adorable patterns, and also shares tons of great tutorials on her blog. I can't wait till Lola's old enough to wear a bustle backpack!

In addition to producing fabulous tutorial and patterns, Jess also is the woman behind SewSet, the online sewing directory where designers and bloggers can upload links and photos to their tutorials and patterns. The genius of SewSet is that users can search for almost any kind of sewing tutorial or pattern, both free and for purchase, and it's purely sewing projects. It's such a great and easy way to find what you're looking for! I've used SewSet to search for tutorials and have also uploaded many of my own tutorials and patterns, and it's been awesome. It's funny that it took so long for someone to bring such a great idea to our online community! Thanks Jess!

Hello everyone! I am Jessica, and I blog over at Me Sew Crazy. I was so excited when Abby asked me to be a part of her Flashback Friday Series, its always fun to look back and remember. And today I thought we would all have a good laugh - at me.

That gorgeous piece of work right there is my original blog header. The header that started it all, I call it 'Ode to MS Paint'.

The images I created for my posts were all from the same Paint family, and now you are going to really fall off your seat. I was inspired by Noodlehead's logo at the time. What the what?!!! Let me clearly state - her logo was gorgeous. That being said, it looked nothing like this. And lastly...

My first sewn product photo post. A tutorial showing how to turn Martha Stewart's tomato pin cushions into pumpkins. Notice how I don't use blog etiquette, and I repost the entire tutorial on my site? I am sure her stats are hurting on that one. Not to mention my great lighting, fabulous focus, and careful attention to detail for the photographic composition and background. Now, why am I showing you all of this? For a good old Friday morning laugh?  Of course. But there's more. You see, we all need to start somewhere. No one starts blogging and is as good as Dana. It takes time to learn, it takes time to get to know yourself as a blogger and on-line creator, and it takes time to figure out what works for you and your readers. Still doing the 'compare game' with your blog vs. the big fish?  Let me give you a tip - go to any one of those blogs and check out their very first few posts. Now breath a sigh of relief. Everyone has to start somewhere. One of the things I absolutely love about blogging is how much it has helped me to grow. I have learned things that I can carry with me for the rest of my life, such as better photography skills. That is invaluable to me as a mother with children, knowing that I can capture beautiful quality photos of my kids throughout life. I have learned photoshop, html, grading and digitizing patterns, pr skills, and so much more. All because of blogging.

Furthermore, I have met some of the most remarkable women through blogging. Friends that I will have for a lifetime that I might never have met if it weren't for this outlet. Blogging has caused me to stretch in ways I never imagined, and I am so thankful for it. So as I look back and laugh this Flashback Friday at where I started on my blogging journey over 2 years ago, I am also glad. Because it was that silly header that got me going to where I am now. Thanks so much for allowing me to walk down memory lane with you Abby! It was fun to go through some of my beginning posts and laugh / cringe a little - ha!

Thanks for joining us Jess! I love this take on your flashback! I think we can all relate. I cringe when I look back at my first header, which I thought was so awesome at the time! And great advice, too. It really does take a lot of time (more than most of us would probably care to admit :)) to learn and grow with our blogs, but luckily we as bloggers have each other for support and encouragement along the way! I hope you all have a fantastic weekend - I have a really fun new tutorial to share with you on Monday, see you then!

Long Sleeved Polly Peasant Blouse

It only took me half of winter to finally make a long sleeved Polly Peasant Blouse for Lola.

I found the knit fabric in the clearance isle at JoAnn one day - who could resist the shimmery polka dots?! Not me, apparently.

Although the pattern has short sleeves, it was simple to add long sleeves by just adding length to each sleeve piece.

I obviously also omitted the sleeve elastic. I originally was going to keep it in, but like it better without so just sewed up the casing opening that I had created.

I took these photos on a day when the sun decided to peek out from behind the clouds for a minute. By the time I got Lola dressed, the sun was gone. That's a Seattle winter for ya.

It's getting harder and harder to keep Lola in one place for more than a second. She's now army crawling where ever she pleases, which keeps me on my toes and reminds me of everything that is yet to be baby proofed.

She's still a little doll though, very patient with her older brothers and their antics. And one day I know that she'll let me sleep through a whole night. Or maybe even more than three hours at a time. I'll take what I can get :).
