Quick Top Alteration

Do you ever feel like it's the quickest and easiest fixes that can make the biggest difference? Me neither, hehe! But this time it did!

I bought this peasant shirt recently, and didn't realize just how boxy it really was until I got home. I wanted a shirt that was flowy and roomy, and nursing-friendly, but this was a little too roomy and shapeless. Exhibit A:

I grabbed some 1/4" elastic, and stretched it as much as it would allow while I sewed it to the wrong side of the shirt back with a zig zag stitch. The result? It's still roomy and comfortable, but the excess fabric is pulled in now, giving the shirt more shape. Much better!

Polly Peasant Dress & Blouse Testers

I've been really excited to share today's post with you, as I had some great pattern testers help out with the Polly Peasant Dress & Blouse Pattern. Since the pattern has 10 sizes and several different options in each size, I had more testers than I have with my other patterns, and I have to admit it was really fun to see all of their dresses and blouses rolling into my inbox! I also realized as I was putting this post together that I have too much to share in one post, so we'll call this installment one, and I'll share the rest soon!

Disclaimer: I'm not sure how I ended up with testers that all had adorable daughters or girls to sew for. Seriously, you'd think I planned it that way, but I guess I'm just lucky!

Krista from Handmade Homemaker made a floral scalloped blouse for her daughter.

Cameron made this sweet dress for her daughter. Gotta love those pig tails :).

Kristy from Hopeful Threads made both a dress and blouse for her daughter - if you're ever wanting to use sewing as a way to help others, please check out Kristy's blog!
Jen from The Crafting Fiend made this birthday shirt for her daughter and added the applique.

Heidi from Stitches by Heidi. Her baby reminds me of a little red-headed Lola! I don't think I've looked at this photo yet without smiling :).

And look - I think she likes her dress! So precious.

Jen made a polka dot dress for her 2 year old and a cute blouse for her 5 month old.

And I'm convinced I need this fabric after seeing this dress by Natalie from Our Old Southern House. I love the navy.

Thanks so much ladies for all your help and feedback! The pattern is available HERE. If you've made a dress or blouse of your own, be sure to add it to our Flickr group! Happy Monday!

Review: VTech's Switch & Go Dinos!

My two boys, ages 3 and almost 5, have two favorite toys: dinosaurs and cars. You can imagine my delight when I recently had the chance to review VTech's Switch & Go Dinos™, which transform from a dino into a vehicle in just a few simple steps. Wyatt and Weston were super excited for their new toys and had them out of the boxes before I even had a chance to take a photo.

One thing I immediately noticed about the dinos is how easy they were for Weston, who is 3 years old, to transform on his own, yet Wyatt, my almost 5 year old, still finds it challenging enough to keep his attention. We've had other transforming toys in our home, and they always seem to be too complicated for the under 5 age, and it was fun to see Weston proud of himself for doing it on his own.

My boys have been playing with the dinos non-stop since they arrived, and the fact that they are still in one piece is a testament to their durability. Toys do not stay in one piece for long in our home, but the Switch & Go Dinos have proved to stand up to the challenge! They've been raced, dropped, and thrown (ahem, not allowed), and surely will go through many more adventures.

The toys also come with an LCD screen with customizable animations that are different when in vehicle or dino mode. I also love that the action buttons tell interesting dinosaur facts when in dino mode. It's a great way for kids to learn some great info about dinosaurs without even realizing they're learning! And starting at $15.99, there are 7 different, unique Switch & Go Dinos. They are great toys for such a reasonable price.
Check out our video here!

Wonder what the video is all about? VTech is challenging kids to transform their imagination through the Show & Tell with Switch & Go Contest. Read the details and enter to win some great prizes!

· Contestants will upload a 15-30 second video to the VTech Facebook page of their child’s home-made dino creation. In the video, your child can show us their new Dino by drawing, building or customizing their existing Switch & Go Dino. Don’t forget to tell VTech about the cool things your child's Dino does!

Show – What does your child's Switch & Go Dino look like?

Let your child choose 1 of 3 ways to show-off their home-made Dino creation and record it on video:

o 1. Draw: They can use markers, crayons, paint or pen to sketch your creation on paper

o 2. Build: They can use foil, paper, cardboard, or any non-branded household items to build your Dino

o 3. Customize: They can update theirr own VTech Switch & Go Dino with accessories and fun props to give them a new image!

Tell – What makes your child's Dino large and in charge? Encourage your child to name it and share its roaring sound effects.

· From October 8 through October 19 cast your vote for the coolest, most creative and fiercest video…

· One grand-prize winner will get a kids lifetime supply of educational toys from VTech. And your video will air on a VTech commercial on Nickelodeon, which you can watch at your very own viewing party with your friends and family. And VTech will also transform your living room into the ultimate Dino den.

To sum it all up, I highly recommend VTech's Switch & Go Dinos. They are a fantastic toy for kids of a large range of ages, and will surely remain a favorite in our home!

Color Blocking Basics

We see color blocking everywhere these days.

From casual wear...

To the runways...

It's a trend that's not likely going away any time soon.

I often hear of women who are intimidated to put together a color blocked outfit, so today let's fix that! Here are a few basics that will help you become a color blocking pro!

Let's start by taking a quick look at the color wheel. The color wheel is your ultimate guide to what works and what doesn't work with color blocking. There are a few different ways we can use the color wheel to pull colors together.
First, colors that are direct opposites, as the first color wheel illustrates. This is definitely the easiest way to color block, and a great way to start. Second, colors that form a triangle, as the middle color wheel illustrates (and yes, there are differently ways to form a triangle, but we're gonna keep it basic for today). Lastly, we can color block using colors that are adjacent to each other, as the color wheel on the right illustrates.

Keeping the color wheel in mind, here are a few more tips:

1. Baby steps. If you're nervous to color block, start with baby steps :). Beginning with just two colors will help you learn what works and what doesn't, and build your confidence with color blocking. You can also always pair a color blocked outfit with a neutral to be safe.

2. Keep it in the family. The color family, that is. When color blocking, keep jewel tones with jewel tones, pastels with pastels, etc.

3. Keep it simple. Solids, solids, solids. Don't try mix patterns when color blocking. Think simple, clean lines for your clothing, and you'll have a much more sophisticated look.

4. Say yes to accessories. A great way to color block is the use of accessories. Adding a colored purse to an outfit makes it hard to go wrong, or try a fun nail polish color!

5. Be strategic. If you're proud of a certain body part, use a bold color to draw attention to the area. If you have an area you're less than pleased with, use a neutral in that area.

There you have it! As you get comfortable with color blocking, you may be able to bend some of these rules a bit. Most importantly, remember that you are unique, and to dress in a way that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Now go and have a look through your closet and you just might find some "new" outifts!

Scalloped Skirt

I made this skirt by accident the other day as I was finishing up some things on the Polly Peasant Dress & Blouse Pattern. Accident may be a bit of an exageration, but it at least was close to an accident :).

I had completed the lower portion of a dress, as I needed photos to go along with the scalloped hem instructions, and was about to throw it back in my scrap bin when I realized it was super close to being a skirt! I slapped a casing on the top, threaded some elastic through, and that was it!

It's simple and sweet, and now I think I may need to make a few more.
