Mirror Before and After

Before:
I've had this mirror for quite a few years, and although I liked the color when I got it, I've gotten sick of the brown. I've been wanting to freshen it up - it was just a little to dark and dreary for my liking.

Enter some white spray paint and a windy day...

After the final coat of paint, the wind picked up suddenly and blew my tape and paper off of the glass and into my fresh paint :(. Half of the bottom side was totally messed up. It kind of ticked me off (apparently ticked off enough to not take a photo, which I thought I had).

Not ready to deal with the disaster, I let it dry and put it on my wall for the time being.

Luckily it didn't take too long before I was sick of looking at it on my wall. I'd see it everytime I walked in my living room and it was looming over my head.

Enter some sanding, more spray paint, and a non-windy day, and voila!

After:

So much better.

I have to admit the sanding didn't totally fix the damage, but thankfully it was enough that I'm probably the only one who will ever notice it.

And actually, after all the hassle, I don't even care that it's not perfect, I'm just happy to have it white and on my wall!

Thank you, Mr. Dewberry

I went into The Material Girls Quilts the other night, with only 10 minutes before they closed. I had planned on buying Joel Dewberry's Aviary II to use for the pattern cover photo of this quilt. Unfortunately for me, which seems to always happen (hello, procrastination?), a lot of Aviary II was sold out, and what was left wouldn't work for my quilt.

Fortunately for me, they had just gotten Joel Dewberry's new line, Heirloom, in that day, and had the bolts stacked up in the back room. I had just been drooling over the line online earlier that day, and have to say that it was even more beautiful in person.

I ended up purchasing the Saphire color-way, but I have to say that the Citrine color-way is just as gorgeous. I think I actually love it even more, but wouldn't have been as perfect for my quilt as the brighter colors will be.

A couple of my favorite prints:

The possibilites are endless with this line! What would you make with it?

Filing Cabinet: Before

If there's one thing that Joel loves, it's hauling back furniture for me from Canada for me to makeover. Loves it. Okay, not true, but I sure love it. We spent that last few weeks up in Canada (more on that later), and Joel's parents wanted to get rid of a little filing cabinet that they don't use anymore.

Of course I jumped at the chance. Heaven forbid I turn down any opportunity to paint furniture. I think this time around I'll actually keep the original hardware, I like the vintage-y look and exposed screws.

My plan is to use the cabinet for all of my sewing related papers and patterns. I still have to decide what color to paint it... I'm thinking green like this dresser? Or I could go blue like Wyatt's bed and dresser, but I don't think that would fit as well in a sewing room. Not quite girly enough. I'm leaning towards green, what do you think?

Maxi Dresses!

You already know about my obsession for maxi skirts...

...But I also have a love for floor-length dresses. I've been planning on making a maxi dress and tutorial all summer, but somehow keep running into irresistable maxi dresses in stores and have bought a couple instead. I'd still like to make one soon, but at the rate I'm going at, we'll see how that goes!

What I love most about maxi dresses is how comfortable they are to wear.
Vintage sheet maxi dress by Craftiness is Not Optional

Didn't want to shave your legs that day? No one has to know! Too bad I can't keep my own secrets on that one... When I get a compliment I should probably just say thank you rather than informing the complimenter of my current leg hair status. Awkward.

I love that you can pair a maxi dress with a wide belt and cardigan. It instantly looks put together but is so easy to wear.

Almost any body type can pull off a maxi dress - you'd be surprised! It gives a long and lean silhouette that is flattering on both slender and curvy figures.

I don't think I'd have anywhere to wear this dress (all dress up and no place to go...), but it sure is pretty, isn't it?!

What's your favorite maxi dress style? Bright and bold? Simple and muted? Flowing and elegant? I'd love to hear!

Side Table Before and After

I've had this side table for a couple of years. There was never really anything wrong with it, but I've never been a fan of the dark stain.

Thanks to summer finally arriving in Utah, I got outside and lightly sanded and painted it. I didn't even bother to use our paint sprayer, I just used good old semi-gloss spray paint.

After painting, I used my electric sander to distress the table.

As you can see, I was fairly liberal with the sanding. I wasn't sure how I'd like it in the end, but I'm happy with the look!

Better Late Than Never?

This week I heard Wyatt yell from across the yard, "Mom, come here! You've gotta see this!"  He was thrilled to see our corn sprouting up through the dirt.

We were over a month late getting our garden planted this year. I should clarify. Joel was over a month late. And I'm not criticizing him - thankfully he did all the work preparing and planting the garden, which of course I'm very happy about. If it were left up to me, it wouldn't have happened this year. Life hasn't left me much time for gardening lately :). He's also done all the watering, with the exceptional request for me to turn the tap on or off. That's something I can handle!

I have to say I was equally excited.

We (uh, Joel - already outed myself on that one) planted corn, cucumbers, squash, jalapenos (and lots of them - just for fun we canned 4 jars of jalapenos last year while making pickles and Joel has been rationing them ever since. I think he's imagining an entire shelf of canned jalapenos for this year), cantelope, watermelon, and lettuce. Our tomato and pea plants didn't turn out great last year so we left them out this time.

Have you planted a garden this year? What are you most excited to harvest? Hope you have a great holiday weekend!
