Giveaway: Yarn Blossom Boutique!

I love the blogging world. I really do. I've formed such great friendships and met so many great people that I wouldn't have ever gotten the chance to meet if it weren't for blogging. One thing that I sometimes wish is that the blogging world would cross over with the "real world" a bit more often in my life. That's why I'm so excited about today's giveaway!

My real life friend Melissa recently opened an Etsy shop, Yarn Blossom Boutique, and let me tell you, it is to die for! She is a master at crochet (although she may not admit it), and offers patterns and photography props that anyone would be thrilled to own.

Patterns like this...

Or how about this...

Have a major sweet tooth for cake? She's got somethin' for that too...

And who could resist this pattern (not me)?!

These patterns are the kind that make a girl want to learn how to crochet, am I right?

Well, now's the time, because Melissa is giving three lucky Sew Much Ado readers their choice of pattern from Yarn Blossom Boutique!

Here's how to enter (pretty please read through before you enter):

Mandatory Entry: Stop by Yarn Blossom Boutique's Etsy shop and leave a comment telling me which pattern you'd choose if you win.
Example Comment: "I would love to win the Strawberry Sweet Cakes pattern!"

Additional Entries:
1. Head on over and "Like" Yarn Blossom Boutique on Facebook.
Example Comment: "I liked YBB on Facebook."
2. Comment about the giveaway your blog, Twitter, or Facebook.

Easter Happenings...

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter weekend. We were lucky enough to have Joel's parents in town, so we got to spend time with them and Joel's brothers and their wives.

We had a fun time decorating Easter eggs. Nothing fancy, just a good old basic kit from Walmart, but Wyatt and Weston thought it was great.

And they liked eating them for lunch today :).

I think the most fun for me was watching the boys hunt for eggs in the backyard.

It was special to teach Wyatt about the reason we celebrate Easter, and so cute to listen to his own interpretation of the story.

How did you celebrate Easter? Anything exciting?

Oh, and check back for a fun giveaway coming up this week!

Aprons for Quilt Market

I was thrilled when Moda / United Notions recently picked up all three of my patterns, and even more thrilled when I was asked if I would make a couple of samples of my Mommy & Mia Apron for their booth at Quilt Market in May. They sent me fabric from Sweetwater's yet-to-be-released line, Hometown, and I was drooling from the moment I opened the package.

I love the fabric on the main body of the women's sized apron -- it's the design that the rest of the fabrics were based around, and is definitely my favorite. Can you believe they put about 1000 different hometowns on the fabric? I have to admit it was fun to see how many places I had been or lived in... although I lost count pretty fast :).

The fabric itself is obviously a great quality as all of Moda's fabrics are, and has a lovely soft feeling to it.

And as hard as I've tried to stop making Wyatt model girlie projects, I had to make an exception for the girls' sized version.

The red in Hometown is such a great color. It's not to bright and cherry-red, but it's a luscious deep red that's really warm.

Along with the red and cream, Hometown will also be available in blue, grey and yellow! I already have a project in mind for the blue and grey...

Isn't it gorgeous?! Ooh, seriously, this is gonna be bad.

And speaking of Market, will I get to see any of you there? I'm so glad it's in Salt Lake this year -- as a new designer I've never been before, and I feel so lucky that it happens to be so close!

Anthro Knock Off Tutorial: Brocco Bobbies

Need a fun, fast, update for your hair? I can always answer that question with a yes, and was so excited when I spotted Anthropologie's Brocco Bobbies:

My first thought was how easy it would be to make something similar. They aren't made of anything more than a fabric yo-yo, a bit of ribbon, and a little bling. The best part is you can customize your own bobbies to your own style and preferences, and the possibilites are endless!

Let's get started...

Materials:
1. fabric scrap - approximately 4"x4"
2. 1/4" or 1/2" wide ribbon scrap - 3" in length
3. needle and thread
4. glue gun
5. vintage brooch or button (my pink and gold "brooch" pictured was part of a vintage bracelet I found at DI)
6. bobby pin
7. small felt scrap

Instructions:
1. First we'll make a fabric yo-yo as the base of our hair pin. Using a bowl or other circular item that is approximately 4" in diameter (the finished yo-yo will be close to half the size of your initial fabric circle, so adjust accordingly if you'd like), trace a circle onto the wrong side of your fabric.

2. Cut along traced line.

3. Thread your needle and knot the end of the thread, keeping the thread doubled. Stitch around the entire circumference of your fabric circle, 1/4" from the edge. Leave the needle and thread attached for now.

4. Pull on the thread to very slightly bring the edges of the fabric circle toward the center. This will make the next step easier.

5. Press fabric circle 1/4" toward wrong side around entire circumference. The right side will look like this:

6. Pull on needle and thread, gathering all edges of fabric circle in to the middle area. The tighter you pull the thread, the flatter your yo-yo will be. I left mine fairly loose to make the yo-yo a bit more bulky. Tie off threads and snip close to knot.

7. Cut piece of ribbon slightly wider than yo-yo and use a match to seal edges from fraying if desired.

8. Using glue gun, place a small amount of glue in middle of yo-yo, and position ribbon over top, pressing it down slightly into the center of yo-yo.

9. Place a small amount of glue on center of ribbon and glue brooch or button in place.

10. Cut a 1"x1" circle from felt and glue to center back (flat side) of yo-yo.

11. Place a small amount of glue on center of felt circle and adhere flat area of bobby pin in place.

Great job, you are done! Now go and make some more :).

Make a statement with red...

Try adding a feather or two...

Or ditch the bobby pin for a headband!

Be sure to add pics of your bobbies to the Sew Much Ado Flickr Group! I can't wait to see what you come up with :).

Nursing Cover and Wipes Case

My friend Allison is due to have a baby in the next few weeks, and came over the other day to have me teach her to make a nursing cover (my tutorial is here). It worked out well: "teaching" meant Allison doing all the dirty work of ironing and me doing the fun sewing parts (her choice, for the record).

She found her fabric at Hobby Lobby, I love how it looks vintage:

Much to our surprise, the kids were still being somewhat well-behaved after we finished her nursing cover, so I whipped up a quick wipes and diaper case (minus the snap -- my tool was giving me grief for some reason that day).

I've actually never made a wipes case before, but now that I have, I wish I'd have been making them for years! They're so quick and easy to make, and you can just wing it without resulting in disaster :).

Two Little Aprons

As I mentioned last week, I've had a nice little (by little, I mean long) list of projects that need to get done right away. Most of the projects are samples for my patterns, and I'm happy to say that I'm over half way through my list. I'm a little behind where I wanted to be by now, but after this week I'll be done it all, so for now I'll just look forward to next week :).

Here are the first two Mommy & Mia Aprons I sewed last week, which have new homes at a couple of local quilt shops here in Utah.

I have to say that I love both color schemes. This apron makes me crave watermelon... and summer too... heck, even spring! Six inches of snow in April is just wrong.

And we all know how I feel about red and turquoise:

I've completed a couple other things that I'll be showing you soon, and still on my list is two aprons that need to be shipped out by Wednesday to make it to Moda / United Notions in time for Quilt Market (more on that later!), and a couple other things. Wish me luck!

Flashback Friday

Remember good old Flashback Fridays? We haven't had one in a long while, and some of you have emailed me wondering where it went :). I recently got an email from Kristen, who shared her Grandma's quilts with me, and I couldn't resist bringing Flashback Friday back for today to share it all with you!

Here's Kristen...

Hi, I am Kristen from 1 Sew Green Mama. I am so excited to be here at Sew Much Ado! This was the first blog I ever followed and Abby has been very inspiring to my little crafty side. I have always loved Flashback Friday and am thrilled to do one of my own.

First, I want to show you this little priceless (to me) item I have that was my grandma's. My dad had it for years after my grandma died, but it was my oldest sisters. When my dad died, she said I can have it because I sew and she doesn't. She may take it back some day, but in the mean time I am enjoying it.

Ok, now on to the quilts... If you've been following my blog, you know by now I am not a quilter. I absolutely LOVE them, but as I have mentioned a time or two, I don't like sewing squares, things that become a square or anything to tedious or complicated. I'm just too impatient. It's funny though, I have always admired quilts and looked at many of them with awe.

When I was a kid for as long as I can remember there were hand made blankets all around either sewn by my mom, my grandma on my dad's side or crocheted by her. My grandma was deaf, so we never talked much, but I very much admired her. I remember every Christmas getting a matching crocheted blanket and slippers. I loved getting those and wearing them all the time. Maybe that's where my secret obsession of cozy blankets comes from, those wonderful hand made blankets from my grandma.

Then when I was a bit older I remember going over to my aunt's house (dad's sister) and she had these old quilts on all her beds. I could just sit and stare at them being amazed and wondering how they were put together and how long it must have took. I never remember expressing what I thought, but when my grandma died, I got one of her quilts. It is such an interesting quilt made from scraps. That was what caught my eye right away. I recognized a brown and white checkered pattern from a baby blanket I had. It was so cool. My grandma just took scraps from all the things she made in the past and made this very unique quilt. She was green and crafty. This quilt became my bed spread for a couple years. I think it was made in the 70's.

It's very cool, each bunch of scraps were made into a square, then sewn together as a quilt. I never really thought about "being green" back then. But, that is one of the reasons I loved this quilt so much, something cool to do with the scraps.

You can see how much it is falling apart. I don't really know the best way to fix it. I don't want to add a new back, but I'm afraid just sewing the ripped parts will make it worse.

Fast forward a few years after my grandma died, I was at my aunt's house and she brought this quilt and a bible out to me and said I could have it. She said it was made by my grandma and she thought I should have it along her bible that she wrote in. Oh my goodness! I was SO excited. Both were such an amazing gift.

This quilt was hand sewn. Can you imagine? The entire thing hand sewn. I have no idea how old it is or why it was sewn by hand.

I absolutely love the fabrics, I wish my aunt could find an old stash of fabrics from this quilt. Some of my favorites are the green above, the blue and white below,

the paisley below,

and this flower print.

I was never able to talk to my grandma because she was deaf and I never learned sign language, but I always knew she was an amazing woman. She was an extremely hard worker, a strong Christian, and a poor, but giving woman. She loved quilting and crocheting, I love sewing and knitting. I guess I do have some history in my blood that gave me the love of handmade.

My grandma used to sit in-front of the TV that would be blaring, she would have no idea because she couldn't hear and she would just crochet away. She wouldn't even have to look at her work, she would count by feeling. Maybe that's how she made this quilt also, in-front of the blaring TV she couldn't hear. It must have been her way to relax, using her hands to make something so beautiful. Funny, she used her hands all day long to talk also.

Thanks so much Kristen! You can all see what Kristen creates over at 1 Sew Green Mama! What do you all think about Flashback Fridays? Would you like to see more of them now and then?
